If you can spare the time to linger, this restaurant’s central location and large windows make it a perfect place for people-watching in the Byward Market. Pull up a stool at the counter (shared by a golden statuette of a smiling Buddha) and take your time to slurp the excellent wonton soup or sip a bubble tea.
Bubble Tea
This Asian specialty drink is as much fun as it sounds. The sweet frothy tea is an iced mix of green tea, juice and flavouring. Wang's offers some 30 varieties – from almond to kumquat. A popular flavour is the taro, an Asian vegetable similar to a sweet potato that has a distinct lavender hue. The tea comes with or without "pearls," the soft and chewy tapioca beads that sink to the bottom of the glass. A large straw is provided to enjoy them.
Noodles and More
Wang's also offers other Taiwanese specialties. The wonton soup is made with the owner’s own special sauce from a soy sauce base, vegetables and pork. The barbecue chicken is heavy marinated in another of the secret recipe sauces and is served with rice and vegetables. Deep-fried pork chops and pork stew are guaranteed to hit the spot. Or, for a lighter snack, try the crispy egg rolls or the vegetarian spring rolls.
Let's Do Lunch
The lunch specials at Wang's are tough to beat around the market. Daily lunch specials include meat and veggies, rice or noodles, dessert cake or green tea. Dinner combos are also available. And, if you are just passing through the busy market, you can still pick up some great take-out from Wang's.
