This vegetarian gem located in the Glebe community centre was founded in 1975, by an Austrian woman by the name of Ilse Kyssa. Ms. Kyssa retired in 1995 when the current owner took the reins. However, Kyssa’s attachment and devotion to the Pantry has remained even today, as she continues to cycle to the Pantry and volunteer there three days a week. The community’s devotion to the Pantry hasn’t wavered either! In 2003, renovations to the community centre proposed the closure of the Pantry. But thanks to dedicated customers, a successful campaign was launched and today the charming eatery in the old church continues to thrive!
Nourishing the Body and Exciting the Palate
Each day, one soup and one entrée of a varied assortment are offered along with one or two desserts plus salads, sandwiches and a variety of teas. Each vegetarian dish is made on-site and celebrates the cultural flavours and taste combinations that are sure to entice every palate. Soups with hearty ingredients and aromatic spices such as Thai corn, leek and potato and Indian split pea may be offered and one of the delectable main course items could be eggplant moussaka, tofu pot pie, pesto pizza, spinach paneer with biryani rice or hummus with quinoa tabouli are sure to please.
A Change from Fast Food Blues
The Pantry works hard to provide organic, local and gluten free choices. Also, all of the meals, sandwiches and salads are made to order so there’s no freezer or microwave preparation here! And once your entrée experience is complete, try one or two of the following delicious sweet selections that might be offered on that day: pumpkin pie, cranberry walnut cake and lemon millet pudding and/or muffins made with spelt flour such as blueberry, zucchini and currant.
