Stepping inside Planet Coffee you are instantly bombarded with the scent of java mixed with cookies and cakes baking in an oven. The walls of this café are an inviting bright orange and yellow. Contemporary art paintings line the walls using vivid colours to depict portraits of exotic creatures. Listen to the music playing in the background – a relaxed set-list of trip-hop, jazz and piano. If you desire, you can sit under a tree on the outdoor terrace.
Independent and Unknown
One of the most distinguishing features of this café is its use of a cool artsy atmosphere to create a traditional coffee shop with a unique feel. In fact Planet Coffee differs from the major chains simply because it is locally owned and independent. Located in the Market at 24 York Street in the middle of the Clarendon Lanes courtyard, Planet Coffee is a secluded little spot that is a haven to those that have discovered this hidden gem.
Not Just Coffee
Nevertheless, the reason to come here is for a coffee or a snack. Some of the most popular beverages here are the espresso-based drinks and you can be sure to find a cappuccino or chai latte. For the socially conscious, Planet Coffee buys their coffee from a fair-trade distributor. If you would like some lunch they feature a different vegetarian soup every day, as well as salads and sandwiches. However, one of the tastiest features of this café is its homemade cakes, cookies and squares. Try a slice of the Planet Coffee Cake, Cosmic Carrot Cake or a summer favourite, a melt-in-your-mouth rhubarb square.
