The original idea that led to the creation of the Stanley Cup (first known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup) was born at an Ottawa Amateur Athletic Association dinner on March 18, 1892. A statement made by Lord Kilcoursie, a player on the Ottawa Rebels hockey club, on behalf of then Governor General Frederick Arthur, and Lord Stanley, was the first introduction of the idea of The Cup.
Proud Historic Moments
The Senator’s memorable, proud history dates back to the ‘original’ great Ottawa Silver Seven and Ottawa Senators teams of 1893-1934 (winners of nine Stanley Cups between them, four in the 1920-27 seasons). The Ottawa Senators were also one of the charter members of the National Hockey League when it first formed in 1917. The last official Ottawa Senators game was in 1934. The team then became the St. Louis Eagles for one season during the 1934 to 1935 season.
The Sens Success
Their heirs, the resurrected 1992 Ottawa Senators, are a hardy team that saw a shaky first few seasons. However, they have seen consistent victory in many areas, especially in the post-season as they reached the 2001 quarter finals. Though their present legacy has yet to see a Stanley Cup, given their unswerving efforts and fine team members, victory should not be far off. It would stand to reason that the members of the groundbreaking Senators and Silver Seven teams are proud of their successors.
