With more than 20 stalls, Parkdale Market is Ottawa’s second-largest open air market, and no matter the season, there’s plenty here to choose from. In the spring most of the vendors offer greenery and flowers to bring home and plant in your garden. Everything from fresh herb plants for container gardening to hanging baskets filled with flowering vines can be had here, along with free advice on how best to keep your plants growing well. In the summer months, a wide variety of fruits and veggies appear to tempt your eyes and taste buds—some locally grown, others from farther afield. Sample a local tomato or strawberry and see how far you get without buying something. Or grab a bunch of colourful cut flowers for your sweetheart. In the fall the squash and pumpkins appear, along with decorative gourds, dried corn and grasses for Thanksgiving decorations.
Getting There is Easy, Leaving is Hard
The Market is in a terrific location, no matter how you plan to get there. OC Transpo bus #2 goes right by, and it’s only a five-minute walk from route #86 as well. Some limited parking is available on the surrounding streets as well as in the park next to the Market. There are also bike racks in the park, so bring your knapsack so you can carry your purchases home.
Crafts: Though this market sells primarily plants and edibles, there are a few vendors selling crafts as well, such as painted ceramics and woodworked pieces.
