History in the Air
Founded in 1919 as the Hunt Club Field, the Ottawa International Airport has come a long way since its early 20th century beginnings. Once known as the Lindbergh Field following a visit by famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, the airport was home to the Canadian Forces Base Uplands up to the early 1990s. Located 10 km south of the city centre, Ottawa International Airport is a major hub of flight activity to destinations across North America and beyond.
Great Service in the Capital
The airport is managed by the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport Authority. After some major renovations, the airport opened its Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) in October 2003 and solidified its place as one of Canada’s most important international aviation centres. The PTB is an easy-to-navigate terminal, designed with passengers’ comfort in mind. It includes increased parking facilities, separate arrival and express departure levels, climate-controlled covered walkways, self-serve check-in kiosks and improved baggage check-in and claim facilities. The Airport Authority recently opened a new wing which offers an additional 7,000 m2 of hold room space and 12 domestic gates.
It's All There
As with any international airport, Ottawa International is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All of the necessary amenities are available for your convenience. This includes a chapel, bank machines, as well as several retail shops and food service stands. If you have a layover that is a bit longer you may want to dine at one of the sit-down restaurants that are also on the premises. Business travellers will be pleased to know that there are private boardrooms and meeting facilities that can be booked in advance.
