Come and enjoy some of the best theatre, music, and dance that Canada has to offer! Situated in downtown Ottawa right alongside the Rideau Canal, is the National Arts Centre, one of Canada's largest performing art centres. Conceived as part of Canada's 1967 Centennial Celebrations, the NAC officially opened its doors in 1969, and has been hosting some of the world's best performers ever since. The centre also has a strong educational component, helping young artists discover their path. Professional development opportunities are available for young performing artists and there is family programming to excite young minds.
Four Theatres to Serve You
Each of the four theatres housed in the National Arts Centre caters to a specific crowd. Whether it be dance, English theatre, French theatre or community programming, the National Arts Centre has the beat covered. The Southam Hall seats 2,323 spectators and is used for musicals, ballet and opera. The Theatre seats 897 people and is ideal for plays, seminars and conferences. The Studio Hall seats between 250-300 people and is the most versatile of the four spaces. It is used frequently for corporate seminars and presentations. Finally, the Fourth Stage can seat 150 spectators and is used mainly for dance, music, storytelling, theatre and other events on its multi-purpose, multi-disciplinary stage.
NACO
The National Arts Centre Orchestra, led by musical director Pinchas Zuckerman and conductor laureate Mario Bernardi, is an internationally acclaimed 46-member orchestra. Although the orchestra calls the NAC home, they also have an extensive touring schedule as part of their mandate, which also includes recording, music education, and the performance of contemporary works.
