The range of topics at Mother Tongue is both extensive and impressive. Shelves are stocked with local, Canadian and international fiction and poetry, feminist and cultural theory, First Nations writings and children's books. There are also books on spirituality, writing, psychology, violence theory, parenting, health, childbirth, breastfeeding, sexuality and gay and lesbian studies. And if all that weren't enough, you'll also find music and spoken word recordings, T-shirts, greeting cards, candles, jewellery and magnetic poetry.
Connected to the Community
Mother Tongue supports local expression. Not only do they host poetry readings by local writers, they also stock works by Ottawa area writers. A good look at their walls will reveal paintings by local artists, and there are CDs local poets and musicians. If you want to know what's going on in the area, drop in and check out their events board, which is posted with flyers and local event announcements.
If you're looking for anything related to women's issues or are in search of new reading material, step into Mother Tongue Books. Even if you don't leave with a book, you'll have a better idea of some of the creativity Ottawa has to offer.
