Minto Park is located in downtown Ottawa and occupies a full city block. The park is bordered by Elgin Street on its west side, Gilmour Street on the north, Cartier Street on the east, and Lewis Street on the south. It contains picnic benches, street lights and several monuments. It is an attractive place for artists, writers and musicians. There are occasional fairs that offer local crafts for sale.
A Place of Remembrance and Activism
A number of groups keep Minto Park a busy place, particularly during the spring, summer and fall. A series of murders of women led to the creation of the Ottawa Women’s Monument, which was dedicated in 1992. A number of stones flank a central sculpture. A memorial service is held each year to remember those women and the victims of the École Polytechnique massacre. Minto Park is often the staging area for protests on Parliament Hill or other locations and is used by activists.
Keeping the Park Clean
Keeping a park clean can be challenging at times, but Minto Park is part of the Adopt-a-Park program operated by the City of Ottawa. The program encourages community involvement in the care and maintenance of the park. Volunteers conduct a clean up of the park a minimum of twice a year—once in the spring and once in the fall. The total number of adopted parks in the new City of Ottawa now exceeds 80.
