Youth outreach, workshops, food and clothing distribution and computer classes are only the beginning. The collective kitchen gives people the opportunity to come together to cook and learn about healthy cooking. The House participates in many community events and is an active part of the local security committee. They also provide emergency and referral services.
These kinds of houses are set up throughout the city in Ottawa Community Housing Communities. Typically housed in one of the units themselves this is a common space the tenants can come to for information and to take part in programming. There are currently 15 in Ottawa. This particular house has been operational for more than 10 years and serves the 1315 housing units in the area, giving priority to tenants in its own area of service. The homes do not operate by advertising or through websites but instead information is shared through word of mouth and flyers displayed at the home itself.
The Community House is well supported through the generosity of the Ottawa Food Bank, Byward Market vendors who provide fresh produce and baking, the United Way and Ottawa Community Housing who provide the space – the city of Ottawa also contributes by providing renewable funding from the city. This includes money for salaries and operational costs. Though the home does not have space to accept donations of furniture or equipment they are always open to gifts of gently used clothing, cash or canned goods. Because of the regional nature of the homes they can only accept donations from people in the surrounding areas.
