Started by Carleton University professors and students, the theatre has gone from hosting performances wherever and whenever they could find space, to being one of the most established theatres in the area. Formerly located on Gladstone, the Great Canadian Theatre Company changed its look, its location and its name with an official re-opening in October 2007.
Now housed in the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, the theatre occupies 23,000 square feet of a 100,000 square foot facility that also incorporates condominium units. Besides being impressive to behold, the new building is environmentally stunning as well. From the smallest detail such as environmentally friendly glue and paints, to the major work of collecting rainwater for use in the toilets, everything about this new site makes good sense.
Spread over three floors, the theatre space includes two stages – the 262-person main stage and a smaller space with flexible seating that can accommodate up to 90. Coming in on the main floor guests will discover the Time and Again café and wine bar. The second floor holds a treasure of an art gallery whose exhibits are tied to the themes of current stage productions. Season subscriptions are available as are tickets for individual shows. Students can take advantage of the great rush hour seating program where they can purchase available show tickets starting one hour before show time.
