After climbing a steep flight of steps with colourful painted fish leading the way upstream at the tiny Bank St. entrance (blink and you miss it), Flipper's, deep in the Glebe, offers a plethora of seafood to delight any deep-sea palate. Upon opening the door, a lobster tank bubbles away, teeming with someone's future dinner. A copper-plated bar, antique painted furniture, ocean-inspired décor, metal artwork, and brick walls give this second-floor restaurant an old-fashioned feel, even though Flipper's has only been around since 1980.
Sea-Food and Eat It
If it's been in the water, chances are it's crossed Flipper's extensive menu. The old standbys of seafood chowder and beer-battered fish and chips share the pages with quirky items with monikers like "PEI Pot of Mussels" and deep-fried calamari with citrus aïoli and seafood sauce. Other items that pack the list are a house specialty, the fresh blackened fish of the day with artichoke, tomatoes and mushrooms (in small or large platters), the grilled chicken with red onions and tomatoes in lemon garlic cream sauce and the spinach with season vinaigrette salad. For the non-seafood-lover, there is an eight ounce strip sirloin steak.
Don't miss the whole point of coming to a seafood restaurant: a combination platter of broiled lobster tail, scallops and shrimp and their Alaskan king crab. Specials are also available, so please call first to see what's on the menu.
Vin du Monde
Flipper's also has a separate wine list teeming with assorted international wines from Chile, South Africa, Australia, Germany, France, Italy and California as well as several sparkling wines. And their cakes and pies are also quite attractive.
