Farm Boy first set down its roots in Cornwall as the inspiration of Jean-Louis Bellemare. His focus was on providing customers with only the freshest quality produce available. In 1983 a second store was added by a second Bellemare brother and over time the product line grew to include deli, bread and dairy. The brothers expanded into Ottawa in 1992 and Farm Boy is now proud to boast eight locations across Ottawa.
The Freshness Concept
Unlike other grocers who stock shelf upon shelf of dry goods, paper products, chemical goods, even tools, clothing and TVs, Farm Boy has always been about fresh foods. Although the stores now do carry a small selection of things like crackers, sauces and dressings, they are only interested in quality goods. Many even carry the treasured Farm Boy name and for consumers it means you know you’re getting only the best. The majority of the store however is dedicated to farm fresh goodness. Produce, meat and dairy, all perfectly displayed and of exceptional quality. How do they do it? By 3 a.m. Farm Boy buyers are at markets in Montreal and Toronto, seeking the best produce and negotiating the best price for their clients. By 7 a.m. those finds are on their way to local Farm Boy stores.
Many of the non-farm products Farm Boy carries were brought in as response to requests from customers. Always wanting to be responsive to its clients Farm Boy regularly undertakes surveys and is always open to feedback and comments from customers. Products are regularly brought into Farm Boy offices for tasting and quality analysis by staff. Labels are checked, items are taste-tested and discussions follow as to whether items are worthy of the Farm Boy name. This customer responsiveness is evident in the growing line of prepared and deli foods now available. The prepared foods offer convenient meal preparation with all the taste and quality people have come to expect from Farm Boy. Customer response also drove Farm Boy to begin carrying a full line of gluten-free products as well as the addition of more dairy-free and meat-free alternatives.
