Designed by Native-Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is considered one of the most striking architectural masterpieces of the twentieth century. The award-winning building, with its dramatic, curved lines, attracts admirers from all over the world and is considered essential viewing for anyone visiting the national capital region.
Permanent Exhibitions
Permanent exhibitions include the Grand Hall, a stunning gallery which focuses on the Native peoples of the Northwest Coast and includes dozens of authentic totem poles; the First Peoples Hall, an area dedicated entirely to Canada's Native peoples that contains more than 2,000 artifacts; and the Canada Hall, which recounts a thousand years of Canadian history. The Canadian Postal Museum preserves and interprets the history of postal communications, and the Canadian Children's Museum offers a hands-on discovery area for children of all ages. An IMAX/OMNIMAX Theatre and a performing arts theatre are among the other facilities. The Museum also presents more than 15 special exhibitions each year, celebrating various aspects of Canadian and international culture.
